It is no secret that Barcelona explored several options during the summer tranfser window in their pursuit of a new right-back.
Cesar Azpilicueta was the club’s primary target, but he signed a new contract with Chelsea. There were links to Juan Foyth, but the Villarreal defender’s injury put an end to any hopes of his arrival at Spotify Camp Nou.
Thomas Meunier was also an option considered but Borussia Dortmund were unwilling to let him leave. Ultimately, Barça ended up bringing in Hector Bellerin on a free transfer after Arsenal terminated his contract.
As per a report from SPORT, Barcelona looked at another player as an option for the right-back position in the form of AS Monaco youngster Vanderson.
The report states that the Blaugrana like the 21-year-old Brazilian a lot due to the attacking facets of his game. He is tall, strong and powerful while backing up with express pace, making him an ideal fit for the profile that Barça were looking for.
To that end, club director Mateu Alemany approached Monaco for Vanderson after Xavi informed him to sign a new right-back to replace Sergino Dest. However, the Ligue 1 outfit quoted a massive price tag of €60 million for the Brazilian
Furthermore, Monaco were uninterested in selling Vanderson, having signed him from Gremio only in January earlier this year. Either way, the price tag was enough to put Barcelona off, although they continue to monitor the 21-year-old Brazilian.
Indeed, the Catalans have big plans for signing a new right-back next summer and Vanderson is among the targets that they will look at, although they might have to face competition from Manchester United and some other clubs from the Premier League.
With Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto both set to be out of contract in 2023, a new right-back will be needed at Spotify Camp Nou. Whether Barcelona go after Vanderson again or look at other alternatives remains to be seen.
