What Erik ten Hag and Manchester United will work on during international break

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has suggested that the team will work on ‘structure’ during the international break, but admitted that it would be difficult with so many players away.

The Reds are not back in action until the start of October when they face off against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, but the United boss is still keen to continue improving with the players that are set to remain at Carrington during the break.

Ten Hag’s men will have gone nearly a month since their last Premier League match, with the past two games against Crystal Palace and Leeds United being postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Given the upcoming international break – the last one before the World Cup in Qatar gets under way in November – several of United’s players will not be present for much of the next fortnight.

United have 15 first-teamers – including players currently out on loan – representing their countries on international duty over the next couple of weeks.

Reds boss Ten Hag has admitted that it is difficult for his team to continue developing due to the absences, but insisted the work will continue at Carrington with the players that remain.

“I don’t have the players,” the Dutchman said. “What can we plan? We can plan work structures with the players who will be there. They will get a break but also have good sessions. We can work on specifics but, when 90 per cent of the squad is not there, we cannot work on development. That is clear.”

United, who defeated Sheriff 2-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night, face a long journey to Cyprus for their clash with Omonia Nicosia in their third Group E match following the Manchester derby.

After that away trip, the Reds travel to Goodison Park for a Premier League match against Everton, before welcoming Omonia to Old Trafford on Thursday, October 13.
